It is officially race week in the city of Durban.

As thousands of athletes prepare to take to the streets this Sunday, May 3, 2026, organizers of the Durban International Marathon are excited to announce a strategic route optimizsation designed to make one of South Africa’s fastest 10km courses even more competitive.

“We are entering Race Week with incredible momentum, and this adjustment is all about the athletes”, said Steve Mkasi, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee.

The M4 start provides a straight, flat power-start that eliminates congestion and sets the stage for fast times. Whether you are chasing a sub-30-minute PB or enjoying a world-class morning walk, this is the most runner-friendly version of the course yet.

In an ongoing effort to improve runner flow and record-breaking potential, the 10km start line has been refined to provide a more direct, high-speed launch. The race will now begin on the M4 highway, approximately 50 meters north of Walter Gilbert Road, with the field heading south.

By utilizing the expansive lanes of the M4 from the very first stride, the launchpad start removes technical early turns, allowing both elite contenders and social runners to find their goal pace immediately. The course remains a certified, pancake-flat 10km, culminating in a grand finish at the Moses Mabhida Stadium (People’s Park).
