With the starting line in sight, the countdown to the Durban International Marathon has begun. The Local Organizing Committee has confirmed that preparations are entering their final phase as we approach race day on Sunday, 3 May 2026.
Building on the electric atmosphere and record-breaking participation of the 2025 edition which saw over 6,200 finishers, this year’s event is poised to deliver an even more unforgettable experience. The signature 42km marathon and 10km road race will once again unfold along Durban’s stunning coastline, welcoming elite athletes and recreational runners alike to the starting line.
The marathon’s rapid ascent from a local event to a premier fixture on the provincial and African running calendar is undeniable. With a significant prize pool attracting world-class champions and a reputation for fostering local talent, the 2026 edition is shaping up to be the most competitive and celebratory yet.
“We can feel the energy building. The starting line is coming into view, and it represents a new beginning for so many runners,” said Steve Mkasi, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee.
“We are building on the solid foundation of our record-breaking fifth edition, and our team alongside our incredible sponsors and partners are finalizing every detail to ensure that when those runners take off, they experience nothing short of excellence.”
Mkasi emphasized the comprehensive preparations underway.
“From athlete facilities and course safety to the vibrant spectator experience along the route, we are committed to showcasing the very best of Durban. 3 May 2026 will be our most ambitious chapter yet, and we can’t wait to welcome the world to our starting line.”
As the meticulous planning shifts into high gear, the Durban International Marathon continues to stand as a beacon of community, sporting achievement, and the vibrant spirit of eThekwini.
Organizers are encouraging runners from across the country to secure their entries now.
The countdown is on. The starting line awaits.
