The Durban International Marathon is delighted to welcome on board the Road Accident Fund as one of our partners for the 2025 edition of the race.
As part of its ongoing efforts to reduce road accident deaths, the Road Accident Fund (RAF) is promoting safe road usage in the lead up to and during the 2025 Durban International Marathon in May. Runners and the public will be urged to be vigilant to avoid injury or death in an accident. They will also be educated on how to claim from the RAF in the unfortunate event of being involved in a road crash.
RAF spokesperson, McIntosh Polela, said: “Road injuries and fatalities are partly a consequence of negligence such as speeding, drunkenness, driving fatigued and jay walking. The RAF is confronted daily with the tragic consequences of people flagrantly disregarding the traffic rules and we urge people to stop this recklessness.”
Besides runners maintaining their visibility by wearing coloured clothes, other road safety tips they must follow include facing oncoming traffic and ensuring emergency details are available in the event of an accident. Motorists are meanwhile encouraged to follow the basic rules of the road such as not texting and driving, keeping a safe following distance and taking frequent rest breaks.
The RAF has committed itself to finalising claims within 120 days from the day of lodgment provided all the necessary documentation is submitted in its entirety and timeously. Claims can be submitted for:
- Medical expenses which include emergency and non-emergency medical treatment, only in cases where the expenses have not been paid by medical aid.
- Past and future loss of earnings or income.
- Future medical expenses.
- General damages for serious injuries.
- Funeral expenses.
- Past and future loss of support
In the regrettable event of being involved in an accident, the RAF Contact Centre is reachable on 087 820 1 111 from Monday to Friday, 07h45 to 16h00.
Claimants may also contact the RAF’s Contact Centre on the WhatsApp number 071 605 4707, via SMS on 44930, or by email on [email protected]. In addition, the RAF is reachable through its offices countrywide, details of which are available on its website on www.raf.co.za.
