This condition often causes pain at the back of the lower leg, specifically around the Achilles tendon, which connects the heel bone to the calf muscles. Common causes include overpronation, rapidly increasing workload, and tight calf muscles.
To manage the condition, it is recommended to initially reduce the load to control inflammation, followed by gradually reintroducing activity while addressing contributing factors, such as overpronation. Eccentric strengthening exercises have proven effective in treating Achilles tendinopathy. However, it’s crucial to introduce these exercises at the appropriate stage to avoid worsening the injury.
Other treatment approaches include stretching tight calf muscles and correcting muscle imbalances that may cause the calf muscles to overcompensate during activities like running.
