Durban International Marathon

The Durban International Marathon has officially partnered with Hulamin, a leading aluminium manufacturing company in South Africa. This collaboration will span three years and aims to enhance the overall experience of the marathon.

In her first feature, Dr. Nyawose will address a common concern among runners: knee pain on the outside of the knee, often linked to iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS).

Dr. Nyawose will provide valuable information on how to recognize the symptoms, understand the underlying causes, and seek effective management strategies to prevent recurrence. We encourage you to look out for her insights and tips, which will not only help you stay injury-free but also enhance your overall running performance.

Struggle with that knee pain on the outside of the knee?

It could be iliotibial band syndrome. While there are many causes of knee pain located on the outer side of the knee in runners, iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is one of the most common conditions especially in runners or cyclists.

This condition occurs when the iliotibial band (ITB), a structure that runs from your hip to just below the outside of the knee becomes irritated.

Some of the most common causes of ITBS are weak hip muscles, tight ITB, increasing your running load too soon, or biomechanical malalignment such as knock-knees, flat feet, which change the way your muscles work during running.

A Biokineticist can assess the root cause of ITBS in order to manage it and prevent it for recurring. Management of ITBS depends on the cause of the problem and the severity of the condition, so it is important to get professional assessment in order to assess your condition.

Dr Zingisa Nyawose is a Biokineticist based in Durban central and can be contacted on [email protected] for assistance with musculoskeletal injuries.
