As we prepare for the fifth edition on 4 May 2025, the Durban International Marathon continues to evolve while staying true to what makes it special.
This isn’t just another race – it’s a celebration of our running community and our beautiful city.
Steve Mkasi, Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee
For the past four years, the Durban International Marathon has consistently produced remarkable results, establishing itself as a marquee event in the regional athletics calendar.
Each edition has attracted an impressive roster of elite athletes, including past champions like Isaac Mpofu, Tebello Ramakongoana, Sian Oldknow, and Elroy Galant.
Both Oldknow and Galant had outstanding performances last year, winning the race and subsequently representing South Africa at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Their achievements underscore the marathon’s status as a launchpad for athletes aspiring to compete on the international stage.
This year, the marathon optimistically welcomes returning participants and newcomers alike to engage in a thrilling race environment marked by exciting changes, such as a refined route and the prestigious 2025 CAA-Southern Regional Marathon Championships.
“As we celebrate this landmark fifth edition, we remain committed to enhancing the overall experience for all runners while fostering a sense of community and competition that makes our city proud,” Mkasi said.

Key Updates for 2025
- Refined Route: Based on runner feedback, the course has been adjusted to exclude the Promenade section, with athletes now turning onto Sylvester Ntuli Road for improved flow and potentially faster times.
- Enhanced Runner Experience: Expanded hydration stations and new kilometre markers designed for better pacing.
- CAA-Southern Regional Marathon Championships: The inclusion of this prestigious competition ensures elite-level performances that will inspire all participants.
Mkasi emphasises, “We’ve listened carefully to feedback from previous editions. Our partnership with partner’s like the Ntenga Foundation adds deeper purpose, while maintaining our reputation as a world-class sporting event.”
Why This Year Matters
- Landmark 5th anniversary edition
- R340,000 prize pool (R75,000 for winners)
- Opportunity to qualify for international competitions
“Whether you’re chasing a personal best or running your first marathon, Durban in May is where memories are made,” Mkasi concludes.
